Concept Mapping

Concept mapping stresses the importance of prior knowledge. The idea is that students are given a central concept and identify knowledge they already have. It can be done individually or in groups. Instructors can also lead the process. Students can do this activity at the beginning or end of the unit, either as a formative or summative assessment.
